About Us

The Koke`e Resource Conservation Program (KRCP) was created in 1998 under the sponsorship of Hui o Laka, as a pilot program to provide natural resource management and invasive weed control for selected areas of the six thousand acre Koke`e and Waimea Canyon State Parks. Eight years later, in July 2006, KRCP was transferred to new sponsorship under Garden Island Resource Conservation & Development Inc. (GIRC&D). GIRC&D is a 501c(3) community-based nonprofit whose mission is to prudently use natural and human resources to improve Kaua`i’s county’s environment, economy and social fabric, with a unique emphasis on the preservation of the island’s native forest resources for future generations.

KRCP’s staff of four (4) receive continuous on-the-job training in environmental studies, resource management, strategies and methods of forest weed control and volunteer development and coordination. The budget supports student interns and occasional temporary hires. All of the staff participates in continuing education and training to insure that skills and knowledge remain current.

MISSION STATEMENTS

The Koke`e Resource Conservation Program (KRCP) is a collaborative project in vegetation management of the Koke`e Region, sponsored by the non-profit Garden Island Resource Conservation & Development, Inc. in cooperation with DLNR’s Division of State Parks and Division of Forestry and Wildlife. KRCP involves the public in protecting native ecosystem resources, coordinating volunteers to conduct essential invasive alien species removal in selected areas. KRCP’s use of volunteers gets a larger job done as well as heightens public awareness of the need for partnerships and community-based management of the unique ecosystems of Koke`e and the Alaka`i wilderness preserve.

Garden Island Resource, Conservation & Development, Inc.’s (GIRC&D) is to carry out a plan for the orderly conservation, development, and prudent use of natural and human resources to improve economic, social and environmental opportunities for the people of Kaua`i County.
